Formerly referred to as Wessagusset, Weymouth is the oldest settlement site in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, also known as the Thomas Weston Colony of 1622. Incorporated in 1635, the Town of Weymouth is the 22nd largest municipality in the Commonwealth.

The Fore River is a significant estuary in the Boston Harbor Watershed formed by the confluence of the Monatiquot River and Smelt Brook in the Weymouth Landing area of Braintree. As the official gateway to the South Shore, the North Weymouth Business District bordered the site home to major industrial entities such as the Fore River Shipyard, General Dynamics and Bethlehem Steel. In fact, the Fore River Channel has witnessed the passing of every warship built at the former Fore River Shipyard with some of the most notable being the USS Massachusetts, the USS Wasp and the USS Salem, CA-139 which is currently at port in the former Quincy Shipyard.
